    Task One: Cost and construction time estimation for each route

    Unpack the details of each route option to estimate the cost and construction time.
    What you'll learn
    • How to read, understand, and interrogate a design brief to gain an overarching understanding of a project and extract important information.
    • What cost and construction time estimates are, why they are important to projects, and how to complete them.


    Your first task is a cost estimate and construction time estimate. Both are critical when evaluating and analyzing different options as they give valuable insight into each route's requirements. They are two of the major considerations when committing to a given project. Cost and construction time are highly important, as you can imagine!

    Before you start down the path of learning the specifics involved with each of these tasks, we have to get you familiar with the project. 

    All you know so far is that the project is related to the construction of a rail line from point A to point B, and the client has three route options that they want you to compare and analyse. The next page will contain more information on the project details and will get you up to speed on what we are dealing with!

    What you'll do
    • Access and read the design brief and understand the client's situation and the project.
    • Complete a cost estimate spreadsheet and calculate the cost estimate for each option.
    • Complete a construction time estimate spreadsheet and calculate the estimated construction time for each option.
